Anthony (Tony) was born in Rochford, Essex on 24th April 1919. His father Joseph James (1885-1966) was a civil servant and his mother was Dorothy Mary (1890-1963). Tony had one sister, also Dorothy Mary (1914-1999), who was a schoolteacher. She died in mid Warwickshire aged 85.

According to the 1939 census Anthony was living in Benfleet Essex but not with his family. His occupation is recorded as army motor driver. He married a Warwick girl, Eva L M Jackson b.1922 in Q1 1942, in Warwick. They didn’t have any children.

Eva married again in Warwick in 1946 to Caradoc P Stephens (1922-1999). They had two sons.
