Richard was born on 10th November 1902 in Burnley, Lancashire. His father Herbert (1877-1961) was a coal hewer. His mother Elizabeth Ann (1878-1909) died aged 31 leaving five young children. In 1911 Richard was living at Moss Street (Blackburn Council) Board School.
Richard married Gertrude Morgan (1902-1972) in 1924 in Pontefract, West Yorkshire. They had eight children Ronald (1924-1996), Bernard (1925-1990), Dorothy (1927-1953), Rose (1933-2018), Kathleen (1935-1989), Eileen (b. 1937), (Margaret b. 1939) and John (1940-2009). According to the 1939 census the family were living at 4 Micklegate, Pontefract. Richard, like his father, was a coal hewer.
