Lionel was born in Warwick to parents Cecil Henry and Francis Cole (nee Howton).

The 1939 register shows he had an older brother, Cecil Walter (1917-2006), who was working as a Sheet Metal Worker. His father was working as a Floor Inspector and Lionel was a Body Maker and Car Fitter.

Lionel married Jean Olive Perks (b. 1923) in Q2 of 1942. Jean married again, in 1948 and 1956. She died in York in 2013.
