Jack was born in Warwick on the 16th June 1908.
According to the 1911 census he was living at 46 Coten End, Warwick with his parents Robert Bertram (1875-1950) and Maud Elizabeth (1880-1916), his sister Katherine Mary (1906-1995), his mother’s sister Fanny (1871-1955) and two female servants.
Jack attended Warwick School.

Jack’s father was an auctioneer, valuer and estate agent. Jack’s mother died in 1916 aged 35. In 1923 his father married Kathleen Hutton (1895-1977) and they had one son, Jack’s half brother, Robert Gardner (1923-1999).

When he died in 1950 Robert senior (Jack’s father) was buried alongside his first wife, Jack’s mother, in Warwick Cemetery.

Before the war Jack had spent some time in Rhodesia, Kenya and South Africa.  He married Nancy Olver (1912-1994) in 1936 in Warwick. They had two children, John Robert born in 1937 and a daughter born in 1939, by which time the family was living at 41 Northumberland Road, Leamington Spa.

According to probate records Jack left his widow Nancy £8853 1s 4d, the equivalent to nearly £500,000 today.

Their son John emigrated to Canada, he died in 2016.
