Arthur was born in Alderton, Gloucestershire in 1880.  At the time of the 1881 census he was living with his grandparents, William and Eliza Williams and their children Herbert (29) and Fanny (31) who was his mother. All four adults were recorded as agricultural labourers.

In 1884 Fanny married Charles Barrow and in the 1891 census Fanny and Charles were living in Alderton with their two sons Arthur Williams and Percival (5), daughter Eliza (3)  and Fanny’s father William. Charles and Wiliam were both labourers.
Fanny died in 1893 and Charles remarried. In 1901 he was living in Old Milverton, Warwickshire and working as a stockman. His son Percival was living with him but not Arthur.

In 1911, aged 31, Arthur was living at 37 Humphris Street, Warwick with his wife Eliza and was employed as a blacksmith.  They had been married 2 years and there were no (living) children at that time.
