Charles was born in Worcester early in 1899 and was baptised at Holy Trinity Church on 26th February. His mother is recorded variously as Eliza, Elizabeth Janette or Janette Elizabeth.

At the time of the 1901 census Eliza and Charles were living at 26 Lower James Street, Worcester and Eliza was working as a governess, at home. She is recorded as married and head of the household.

The 1911 census records the family living at 1 Court/11 House, Swanswell Yard, Coventry and consists of Benjamin & Janette and four children: Charles (12), William (6), Phyllis (3) and Alice (9 months). Benjamin is working as a blacksmith’s striker at a stamping works.

The Warwick cemetery burial slip gives Charles’s address as 54 Pickard Street.
