Hubert’s parents were Clement Ernest and Sarah Ann (nee Bradshaw) who married on 7th October 1879 at All Saints Church.

Hubert was born in April 1888 and was baptised at All Saints Church on 19th July 1888.  He was the third son of the family and his older brothers were Ernest (5) and Percy (1).  By 1901, the family were living at 19 Hill Street and there two further children, Hubert’s younger sister, Emily (10) and brother, Clement (5).

Hubert’s mother, Sarah Ann, died on the 29th May 1908, aged 53, and is buried in Warwick Cemetery.  Hubert’s father, Clement, remarried in 1910, – to Ellen.

By 1911, the census shows that Hubert as single and serving as a Military Clerk with the Hampshire Regiment.

The family, still living at 19 Hill Street, then consisted of:  Clement and Ellen, Ernest (aged 28 and an Army Sergeant with the Indian Army), Clement Euclid (aged 15 and described as a domestic errand boy) Frederick John Whately (aged 6, step son) and Cecil Arthur Wager (aged 3 months).

Two more children, Mildred Elsie and Charles Douglas, followed.

The Warwick Advertiser of 31st August reported that Sergeant-Major P A Wager, elder brother of Hubert, was awarded the Italian Bronze Medal for valour in August 1918

Hubert is commemorated on the family grave in Warwick Cemetery:

The inscription reads:

In Loving Memory of SARAH ANN the beloved wife of CLEMENT ERNEST WAGER who entered into rest May 29th 1908 aged 53 years.
Also the above CLEMENT ERNEST WAGER who died October 5th 1930 aged 74 years.
And also of their son HUBERT GEORGE WAGER killed in France September 18th 1914 aged 26 years
