Herbert was born in Acocks Green. He had nine brothers and sisters, he was one of the youngest children. His father was a Commercial Traveller; he died in 1899 aged 54.
In 1901 the family were living at 28, Beauchamp Avenue, Leamington Spa. Herbert was working as a clerk for a Brickmaker’s. In July 1907, in Warwick, Herbert married Ethel Bertha Shakeshaft and they had two daughters, Phyllis Ethel born in 1908 and Doris Eva born in 1911.
In 1911 Herbert and family were living at 19 Regent Street, Leamington Spa.
