Herbert was baptised on 7th August 1892 at St Mark’s, New Milverton, Leamington Spa. His parents are recorded as James (labourer) and Lizzie Price
By the 1901 census, Elizabeth Price (without James, but recorded as married) was working as a laundress from home at Field Row in the Stoke St Michael parish of Coventry, next door to James’s parents. She had 3 of her sons living with her: Charles (15), Herbert W (9) and Frederick G (5).
In the 1911 census, Herbert is listed among the soldiers of the RWR at Whittington Barracks, just outside Lichfield. At that time he was single.
Herbert married Ada Painton in Q1 1914 at Warwick and they had a child, Marion Ada on 3rd October 1914. Herbert’s pension records show that at some point the child, Marion, was looked after by a Mrs Florence Gertrude Wallington of 34 Avon Street, Warwick. Marion died in 1973 aged 59.

Herbert was one of four soldiers listed on the Warwick Memorial who died at the Battle of St Julien, which was the second phase of the 2nd Battle of Ypres and was the first occasion on which the Germans used chlorine gas against the Allies. The other three were Walter Newton, Frank Masters and Bert Mitchell.
