William was born in July 1889 in Warwick. He was baptised at St Paul’s Church on 18th August 1889. He had one sister Dorothy born in 1887.

In 1901 the family lived at 8 Stand Street, Warwick. William’s father Thomas was working as a Grocer’s Warehouseman. He died in 1909 aged 51. By the 1911 census William, aged 21, was still living at 8 Stand Street with his widowed mother, sister and Aunt Hannah and Maria Mitchell, who was a retired Schoolmistress. He was working as a domestic gardener.

William’s mother died in 1921 aged 68.
