Elias was born in Warwick in October 1897 and was baptised at St Nicholas Church on 3rd November 1897. He had one sister Annie who was a year older.

According to the 1911 census the family were living at 1 Friar Street and Elias’ father Dennis was a gardener. Elias at the age of 13 was recorded as being a gardening helper. His sister aged 14 was a cigar factory hand. His mother Eva was a hawker.

Annie married Thomas Wilkins in 1926. She died three months short of her 100th birthday in 1996.
