James Henry Kidd was born on 8th June 1898. His parents were John Robert Kidd and Ellen (nee Penn). They had five other children – John, Edey, Florence, Louisa and Elizabeth. They lived at 2 Crompton Row, Warwick, and later moved nearby to 18 Stand Street, where in the 1911 census they were recorded as a family of 5: John and Ellen, James (13), Louisa (11) and Elizabeth (9).

They were members of the Wesleyan Chapel in Barrack Street.
