Henry was born in Edgcote (also Edgcott), Northamptonshire and was baptised there on 19th March 1876. His father William died in 1878 aged 38. His mother Emma worked as a Laundress while bringing up six children; the youngest born the same year his father died. In 1891 Henry, aged 15, was still living at Edgcott, with his mother and 2 brothers.
In 1901 when Henry was 25 and Clara 19 they were both working at Blackdown Manor. Henry was a groom and gardener and Clara, who was born in Sherbourne, was a general servant. Later that year they were married. They had four children, Harry born in 1902, William in 1904 Florence 1905 and Doris in 1910.
