William (Dick) was born in Chesterton near Warwick in 1889. He was baptised in Chesterton on 24th November 1889. He was the second son of six children. His elder brother was Maurice and his younger brothers were John and Robert. He also had two younger sisters Mary and Kathleen.

In 1901 the family were living at 17 Jury Street. William’s father, Robert, was an Estate Agent and Auctioneer. They also has three servants living at the house. William attended Warwick School.  In 1905 William’s father died aged 51.

In 1911, William’s mother Harriet was still living at 17 Jury Street with her eldest son Maurice who was a butcher journeyman and her two daughters Mary, aged 17, a governess and Kathleen, aged 16, a student. Harriet died in 1911 aged 49. Maurice then became head of the family. William emigrated to Australia and lived in Victoria before the war and Robert emigrated to Canada.

Robert fought with the Canadian Expeditionary Force – he returned

William enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force on 16th February 1915.

William’s brother Robert joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 21st September 1914 aged 18. He was listed as wounded on the War Office casualty list on 21st July 1915. He survived the war.
