Tom was born in Warwick in 1891. His father Thomas was a veterinary surgeon and in 1901 the family were living at 20 Jury Street. Tom was 9, his brother Hewitt 4 and his sister Margaret 3. Tom’s grandfather also Thomas, his Aunt Kate and two female servants were also living in the house.

Tom’s mother Mary died in 1903 aged 36. His grandfather died less than a year later in 1904 and his father died in 1910 aged 52. It was then Tom’s Aunt Kate who became the head of the family. According to the census of 1911 Hewitt was a boarder at Warwick School and Margaret was at a boardng school for girls in Worthing, Sussex.

Tom joined the Australian Imperial Force in Sydney on 26 July 1915 aged 25. A sheep farmer is stated as his occupation. His Aunt Kate was named as next of kin.
