John’s father, Joseph was a boatman and did not appear on the 1901 census at which time the family at Lower Cape consisted of mother Jane, Eliza (6) and John (2).

At the time of the 1911 census, the family consisted of Jane, now a widow working as a laundress, Joseph (17), Eliza (16), John (12), Emma (9) and Arthur (7). John’s older siblings were born in London and his younger siblings were born in Warwick. John is listed as having been born in Watford.  The family were living at 26 Waterside on the Lower Cape, Warwick. Only John is recorded as being at school.
