Alfred Robert Hill was born in 1892, the eighth child of William and Maria Hill. Maria Hill died in 1895 leaving William to bring up the large family.

In 1901 Alfred was living at 7 Paradise Street with his father and five of his older siblings: Frederick (27, a wheelwright), Sarah (19, a domestic servant), Alice (15, a milliner), Walter (13) and John (11). At that time his father was an employed watch and clock repairer.

In 1911 the family were living at 7 Burnaby Terrace, Paradise Street (probably the same address).  Also living there were 3 of Alfred’s older siblings: Alice (25) Walter (23) and John (20). The census record shows that 2 of Alfred’s siblings had died.

Alfred, aged 18, was a shop assistant and errand boy for a chemist at this stage. His father was working from home as a watch/clock repairer, on his own account.

Alfred is remembered on the family grave in Warwick Cemetery:
