Ernest was born in January 1883 in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire. He had one older brother Percy and two younger brothers Harry and Archie. His father Charles worked on the railways as a Brake Fitter.
In 1901, at the age of 14, Ernest was also working on the railways as a furnace boy. According to the 1911 census Ernest was boarding with a family in Dukinfield, near Manchester. He was still working on the railways but had become a Coach Finisher.
