Charles was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire in April 1887. He was baptised in Stratford upon Avon on 20th July 1887. His father also Charles was a Bank Manager. He had one younger sister Dorothy Margaret.

In 1910 he married Lillian Rainbow and on 7th February 1911 their daughter Rene Margaret Frances was born. By the 1911 census Charles and Lillian and their baby daughter were living in King’s Heath, Birmingham. He had followed his father into banking and was working as a Bank Clerk. Lillian died in Warwick in 1971 aged 82.
