William was born in Warwick in 1877 and baptised on 13th December 1877. William’s father Thomas was a bricklayer. William was one of five children although two of his siblings died as children. William’s mother Elizabeth died in 1906.
On 13th April 1903, in Warwick, William married Harriet Susannah Underwood. They had four children Annie born 1904, Arthur born 1906, George born 1908 and Bertha born 1912. In 1911 the family were living at 25A Avon Cottages, Avon Street. William was a house painter and had an entry in the Spennell’s Directory of Leamington from 1907-1914.
Harriet continued living at 25A Avon Cottages until she died in 1948 aged 71. William is commemorated on her grave in Warwick Cemetery, where the inscription reads:
In Loving memory of
HARRIET SUSANNAH ENSTONE died 2nd March 1948 aged 71 years.
And her beloved husband L/Cpl. WILLIAM PETO ENSTONE killed in France July 1916
