George was born in 1894 in Warwick. He was baptised on 21st October 1894 at St Mary’s Church. His parents were John and Jane Edmunds. George was one of a large family of 10 children including a half brother, William.

George’s father’s first wife Abigail, died shortly after William was born in 1876. John married Jane in 1882 and they had nine children Thomas, Edith, Florence, Albert, Dorothy, Frank, George, Beatrice and Arthur. Dorothy died as a baby and Arthur, the youngest, died in 1902 aged three.

In 1911 the family were living at Waterside, 22 Cape Locks and George’s father was a lock keeper. George aged 16 was an outfitter’s assistant.
