Thomas was born in April or May 1896 and baptised at St Nicholas Church on May 23rd.
At the time of the 1901 census, Thomas and Elizabeth were living with their two children, Thomas Jnr. (4) and Nellie (2) although it appears that Nellie died shortly after the census was taken. The family lived on the premises of their confectioner’s business on Smith Street.
At the time of the 1911 census, the household included Thomas Snr’s unmarried sister Martha. Thomas was attending school. According to the census record, there had been another child who had not survived. Thomas was a member of the St Nicholas Church Choir, played the organ and taught at the Sunday School:
