John was baptised at St Mary’s Church on 16th September 1879. He was the youngest child of Henry and Harriett Brown. His brother Harry was the oldest child (born circa 1867), and there were four older sisters – Harriett (born c. 1869), Janet (born c. 1870), Clare (born c. 1873) and Kate (born c. 1875).
The family lived at various addresses in the parish of St Mary’s – including 1 New Street, 4 The Butts and 11 Church Street.
In 1911, John is a Boarder at the house of Alfred and Jenny Baldock in Kent. Alfred is a ‘Manager – Clothing Salesman’ so may be John’s boss.
By 12 July 1916 John was a Machine Hand and lived at 29 Bannockburn Road, Plumstead, London. His army record states his next of kin stated to be Hattie Brown, sister, of 11 Church Street, Warwick. His sister Clare lived at 20 Broad Street, Warwick. Other siblings lived in Eastbourne
