John Henry Boynton was born in Hartlepool in 1881, the eldest son of Henry and Sarah Boynton.
He married Violet Ellen Gornall in 1908, in Clitheroe. They moved to Warwick and in 1911 were living at 49 Guy Street. They had three children, Henry, born in 1909, Ellen born in 1911 and Theodosia born in 1916.
John was working as a gardner for Sir Michael Lakin and it seems that when he became head gardner he may have been given accommodation at 70 Cliffe Hill (Sir Michael lived at No. 74) since on the Shrine Slip, Violet gave her address as 19 Factory Yard, late 70 Cliffe Hill.
John was initially reported as wounded and missing two months after his death
