Boyles, Arthur Walter

Age: 36
Date of birth: 1880

Parents: George and Clara Elizabeth Boyles
Wife: Rose Elizabeth Green
Address: 21 Church Cottages, Lighthorne, Warwickshire

Occupation: Groom

Arthur Walter Boyles was baptised at Lighthorne on May 16th 1880.  His father, George, is described as a Groom on the baptism record.  George was born in Moreton Morrell before marrying his wife, Clara in Bishops Itchington.

Arthur was the fourth of 13 children.  His eldest brother, William was born in March, Cambridgeshire, the next two children, George and Rhoda, were born in Bishops Itchington.  Arthur was then born in March, Cambs so there must have been some family connections living in that area.  All but one of the following nine children were born in Lighthorne.

The 1911 Census shows George, still working as a Groom, wife Clara and three children remaining at home in Lighthorne – Arthur (now 31), and his younger brothers Leonard (24) and Leslie (14).  George must have been unable to read or write as the census form is signed with a cross and says “the mark of George Boyles”

Arthur married Rose Elizabeth Green in 1916 – she was born in Warwick and it may be Rose who applied for Arthur to be included on the Warwick War Memorial as his name also appears on the Lighthorne War Memorial, where his own, and his family’s connection, is stronger.

Arthur Boyles’ death was recorded in the Warwick Advertiser on 2nd December 1916, alongside another from the same unit, Arthur Shear.

They died at the Battle of Ancre within two days of one another
