Charles Rowland was born in 1894 in Warwick. He was baptised on 4th November 1894 at St. Nicholas Church. He was the eldest child of James Manley and Mary Hannah Blakemore. He had two brothers Albert (Bert) and Reginald and two sisters Phyllis and Olive. Phyllis died in 1915 aged 16.

According to the census of 1911 the family were living at 50 Coventry Road and Charles at the age of 16 was working as a Hairdresser. Albert’s father had been a Grocer and in 1911 was a Provision Dealer. He died in 1917 aged 50 at Hatton Asylum. Mary died in Warwick in 1943 aged 70.

Charles’ brother, Albert (Bert), also died
