Bert was born in October 1896 in Budbrooke, Warwick. He was baptised on 27th December 1896 at St. Nicholas Church. He was the second son of James Manley and Mary Hannah Blakemore. His elder brother was Charles and he also had two younger sisters Phyllis and Olive and a younger brother Reginald.

Bert was a member of the St Nicholas Church Choir

According to the census of 1911 the family were living at 50 Coventry Road and Bert at the age of 14 was working as a Piano Tuner and Repairer.  His father had been a grocer and in 1911 was a Provision Dealer. He died in 1917 aged 50 at Hatton Asylum. His sister Phyllis died in 1915 aged 16.

Bert’s mother, Mary, died in Warwick in 1943 aged 70.

Following the above report, the Warwick Advertiser reported on 14th October 1916 p4:

Mrs Blakemore, 50 Coventry Road, has received news from a prisoner of war in Germany that her son, Sergeant Bert Blakemore, was killed on July 19th, on which date he was reported missing.

Bert’s brother, Charles, also died.
