Frederick appears to have been known as William. He was born in Lincoln. His parents were William, who was a cabinet maker and was born in Waddington Lincolnshire, and Elizabeth (born in Royston, Yorkshire) . He had two sisters, Ruby and Frances and the family were living at 15 Union Road, Warwick at the time of the 1891 census. By 1901, William’s parents were living at 33 Union Road, where they were still living at the time of his death.
William married Florence Weyman in Worcester in 1911. They went on to have three children – George Stuart, Gladys Muriel and Doris Mary.
William’s trade before joining the army was a Striker, possibly a Blacksmith’s Striker or in heavy forging operations such as in the steel industry. On the casualty lists his residence was recorded as being in Warwick.
Although he died in April 1917, Pte. Black’s parents weren’t informed of his death until January 1918:

William’s pension record shows that his wife, Florence, received a sum of £12 10s 11d from the army after his death.

Frederick enlisted into the Worcester Regiment in 1899 at the age of 18. His army records show him as William.
