Joseph Edward Bennet was born in 1890 at Blockley in the Cotswolds. The village was then in Worcestershire; now in Gloucestershire.

By the 1911 census, he and his parents, Edward and Hannah, were living at 10 Friars Court, Warwick, with Joseph’s five brothers, John, William, Thomas, Charles and Arthur. John and Thomas also served in WWI but survived the conflict.

The family attended the Wesleyan Chapel in Barrack Street.

Joseph served in the Cameron Highlanders (Queen’s Own) also known as the Scottish Rifles, who played a significant role on the Western Front, including at the Battle of Mons, the Battle of the Marne and the First battle of Ypres. The Highlanders lost nearly 6,000 men during the war. Joseph was killed on 17th July 1916, probably during the Battle of the Somme.
