Ernest was born in early 1897, in Warwick.

At the time of the 1901 census, Ernest, aged 4, was living with his parents, older brother Percival John (7) and younger brother Reginald Humphrey (10 months) at 16 Joyce Pool, Warwick. His father was employed as a carpenter.

The 1911 census sees the family of 5 still at 16 Joyce Pool with Percival now employed as a cycle maker and Ernest working as a grocer’s errand boy.
