At birth, Edward was registered as Rowland E J Waters. At the time of the 1891 census his parents, Rowland and Mary, were living at 2 Chapel Row, Warwick with 3 sons, Tom (16) a groom, Walter (14), Rowland E J (7) and 2 daughters Grace M (12) and Annie M (9). Rowland Snr. was working as a groom.
By 1901 Rowland Jnr. was known as Edward J Waters. He was living with his parents and elder brother Tom, now a farm labourer, and sister Annie, employed at the gelatine works. They were still at 2 Chapel Row. Edward was at school but was working as a Boots.
By the 1911 census, Mary had died and his father, Rowland, still working as a groom, was living with Edward at 9 Cross Street Warwick. There were also 2 boarders in the household, Charles and Annie Gover, a recently married couple. Edward, aged 28 and single, was employed as a “charge hand chain tester” at a cycle factory.

His father, Rowland Waters, died nearly two years after his son, on 20th October 1918, aged 70.
