Wallsgrove, Joseph (Joe)

In 1901 the family were at 55 Pickard Street.  Living at the house at the time were Emily (16), James (14), John (12), Joseph (8), Fanny (6) and Albert (4).  Living next door at 57 Pickard Street were Charlotte Wallsgrove (38) and her daughter Emily (11).  It may be that Charlotte was Joe’s aunt.

In 1911 the family were still at 55 Pickard Street.  Joe was the eldest of the children still at home, who were:  Joe (19), Albert (14), Charlie (11), George (7), Arthur (5) and Thomas (2).
There was another Wallsgrove family living at No. 50 Pickard Street: James and Emily Wallsgrove, with the younger 5 of their 7 living children. James was a Chimney sweep. Charlotte was no longer at No. 57

Joseph’s father, John, was a chimney sweep and both Joseph and Albert are described as Brick Yard labourers, although the item in the Warwick Advertiser notes that he had previously served in the army and rejoined on the outbreak of war.

Joe’s parents are buried together in Warwick Cemetery and Joe is commemorated on their grave. The inscription reads:

Treasured memories of
FANNY WALLSGROVE died Jan. 14th 1938 age 75
JOHN WALLSGROVE died November 26th 1942 age 80
Also their son JOE killed in action Egypt March 9th 1918
