Ernest John Rooke was born in Leamington Spa in January 1880. He was baptised at St. Paul’s Church, Leamington on 24th March 1880. He was one of five children, three boys and two girls. His mother died
in 1891 at the age of 35. In 1911 Ernest was on the Isle of Wight working at a Prison Warder at Parkhurst Prison. He married Mabel Fanny Peck on the Isle of Wight in July 1914.
After the war, in 1922, Mabel married Ernest Jameson Renshaw. There were no children from either marriage. Mabel died in 1976.

According to the 1901 census, at the age of 21, Ernest was based in Norwich at the Calvary Barracks. His army record shows that he had served in the Boer War during 1901-2.
In October 1914 Ernest was wounded. He was admitted to 2nd Northern General hospital, Leeds. Earnest was entitled to wear a ‘Wound Stripe’.
