Rogers, Benjamin Frank

Benjamin was born in Warwick in 1883. He was baptised at St Nicholas Church on 22nd November 1883. He was one of seven children. He had five older brothers and sisters George, Alice, Ada, Elizabeth and David and a younger brother William.

His father David who was a blacksmith died in 1888 aged 43. In 1901, Mary his widowed mother was living at 12 Church Street with four of her children and working as a cook. Benjamin aged 17 was working as an iron moulder.

On 20 November 1908 Benjamin married Mary Ann Savage at St. Mary’s Church, Warwick. They had five children – Evelyn born 1908, Sidney born 1909, Frances born 1910, Fred born 1913 and Gladys born 1914.

1911 the family were living at 13 North Rock, Saltisford.  Benjamin’s wife, Mary Ann, died in Dec 1914 at West Ham so the children were orphaned after Benjamin’s death.

“Rogers – Killed in action in France, on the 10th August, Pte B. Rogers, 1st Battalion Shropshire Light Infantry, son of Mrs Rogers, 6 Castle Hill, Warwick, aged 33 years”

An In Memoriam notice placed in the Warwick Advertiser on the second anniversary of his death says “Lovingly remembered by mother, children, brothers and sisters”
