Arthur was born in Deptford, Kent. He was already a soldier with the Warwickshire Regiment when he married Mabel Elizabeth Brennan on the 13th December 1904.

Their daughter Eileen Louisa was born in Warwick on 29th November 1907 and baptised on the 23rd May, 1908 at St Mary’s.  There were two other children – Adelaide Mary (born 31st January 1912) and Arthur Henry (born 23rd January 1915).

In 1911 Mabel was working as a cook for the Deedley family at 33 Coten End, Warwick.  Arthur is listed on the census as being stationed at Lichfield Barracks, Staffordshire.

It was Mabel who completed the Shrine application on Arthur’s behalf.

Arthur was a soldier before the war and was at Whittington Barracks in 1911.  He was with the 2nd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment.

In 1913 he was stationed in Malta and attended a Court Martial (reason not known).

His army record states that he was ‘accidentally suffocated whilst on active service.’
