Wiliiam was born in 1895 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire. His father Henry, who was a butcher’s horse driver, had been born in Warwick and so were three of his older brothers Thomas, Harry and Albert.
According to the census of 1911 the family had moved to 22 St James Street, Wednesbury, Staffordshire. William was one of nine surviving children. He had three younger brothers Bertie, Victor and Charles and two younger sisters Nellie and Mary Ann. William aged 16 was working as a furnace hand.
William’s brother, Victor, also died. Their mother completed the application for the Warwick War Memorial and was living at 26 Woodhouse Street at the time.
