Walter was the eldest son of Walter and Ada Pare. He was born in 1891 in Warwick and was baptised at All Saints Church on 7th May 1891. He was one of seven children although his one older sister Frances and a younger brother Arthur had died before 1911.

In 1911 the family were living at 16 Parkes Street and Walter Senior was working as a Kitchen Range fitter. When Walter joined up in 1915 he was working as a labourer and the family had moved two doors down to 12 Parkes Street.
