The Newton family had all been born in Warwick.  Walter’s parents, Isaac and Fanny, married in early 1892 at St Paul’s Church.  In 1901 they were living at 30 Saltisford.

By 1911 the family were living at 8 St Paul’s Terrace, Linen Street.  Walter’s father, Isaac was aged 48 and a bricklayer’s labourer and his mother, Fanny was 40.

Walter was the only son but had 6 sisters, Elsie (20), Frances (18), Hilda (14), Edith (11), Winifred (9) and Marjorie (5).  His brother Thomas was born in 1907 but is not on the 1911 census so may have died.

Isaac died on 14th July 1923 and Fanny died nearly thirty years later on 10th February 1953.  They are buried in the same plot in Warwick Cemetery.

Walter was one of four soldiers listed on the Warwick Memorial who died at the Battle of St Julien, which was the second phase of the 2nd Battle of Ypres and was the first occasion on which the Germans used chlorine gas against the Allies. The other three were Frank Masters, Bert Mitchell and Herbert Price.
