William Henry was born in Warwick in July 1895. He was the eldest of six children. He had four sisters Mary, Theresa, Margaret and Kathleen and the youngest was his brother Aldford.

According to the census of 1911, the family were living at 1 Crompton Street, Warwick. William aged 15 was working as an errand boy.

William’s father, who was born in Jamaica, was working as a general labourer but according to his Warwick burial slip was an ex soldier. He died in 1928 aged 61. His mother Sarah Ann died in 1950 aged 78.
