Joe was born in early January 1889 in Warwick and was baptised at St Paul’s Church on 6th January 1889. He was one of eleven children but only six were still living by the census of 1911. He had one older brother, Albert, an older sister Nellie and three younger brothers, Walter, William and Thomas.

In 1901 the family were living at 5 Parkes Street and Joseph’s father – also Joseph – was working as a blacksmith.

Joe’s mother Annie died in 1937 and his father the following year. Joe is commemorated on their grave in Warwick Cemetery, whose inscription reads:

In Loving Memory of ANNIE MILLS died December 17th 1937 aged 78 years.
And of JOSEPH MILLS died June 30th 1938 aged 72 years.
And of JOSEPH HENRY MILLS killed in France March 6th 1915 aged 28 years
