Megeney, Horace William

Horace was born in 1890 in Warwick and baptised at St Paul’s Church on 6th April 1890. He had one sister, Dorothy Ellen, born in 1900. His mother Mary Jane died in 1903 aged 39.

Horace’s father William married again in 1907 to Mary Elizabeth Griffin. In 1911 the family were living at Fernside, Cape Road, Warwick. Horace’s father was an upholsterer and his stepmother was the Headteacher at Westgate School. Horace, aged 21, was working as an Estate Agent’s clerk at Messrs Godfrey-Payton in Warwick so it is probable that he knew Arthur Godfrey-Payton who was killed in France in 1916.

In 1912 Horace married Mary Ellen FitzGerald – they did not have any children. Mary Ellen died in 1964 aged 72.

The inscription reads:

In loving memory of the beloved wife of WILLIAM MEGENEY died December 16th 1903 aged 39 years.
Also Lieutenant HORACE W. MEGENEY R.F.A. the beloved son of the above killed in action in France September 1st 1918 aged 28
