Charles was born in Warwick in Q1 1880. He had one younger sister Florence who became a milliner’s assistant. According to the census of 1891 the family were living at 8 Melbourne Cottages, Warwick and Charles’ father Samuel was the Parish Clerk at St Nicholas Church.
Charles served in the Norfolk Regiment in the Boer War and by 1911 he was a sergeant based at the Malplaquet Barracks, Aldershot, Hampshire.
Charles married Marion Gertrude Butler in Norfolk on 31st January, 1915. They lived at 49 Priory Street, Warwick.
Charles’ mother died in 1937 aged 73 and his father died in 1939 aged 79.
