Matthew was born in about 1884 in Kilmarnock, Scotland. He had an elder brother Alexander, a younger brother John and a younger sister Jane. His father was a bricklayer. By 1901 the family had moved to 41 The Rock, Saltisford and Matthew was working at the Gelatine Factory as a labourer. In 1911 the family moved to 12 Bowling Green Street and Matthew was working as a gardener.

In 1914 Matthew married Sarah Ann Wills. They had two children Marjorie born in 1915 and Lillian born in 1917 a few months before her father was killed. Sarah Ann remained in Warwick and died in 1958 aged 74.
