Charles was baptised at St Paul’s Church on 20th June 1885.  His father, also Charles, was a Fish Hawker at the time.  His mother, Jane, had ‘domestic duties.’

The family lived at 15 Wallace Street for some time.  Living there in 1901 were Charles and Jane, daughters Lucy (13) and Ada (4), Charles junior (5) and George (15 months)

In 1901, Charles elder sister Ellen Simpson (24) is included on the census, along with her daughter Rose (4).  In 1911, only William (Charles’ brother described as 36 and married) is listed on the census with his parents and Walter Simpson – one of Ellen’s sons.

Charles mother, Jane, died in 1914.

Although he was killed in November 1916, it wasn’t until some 15 months later, in February 1918, that his father was told of his death.
