Percy was born in Peterborough in 1898, where his parents had been married in 1893. His father was originally from Stratford, east London.
In 1901 the family were living at 38 Chapel Street, Warwick.
By the time of the 1911 census, the family – Arthur and Caroline and 3 children: Hilda (14), Percy (12) and Edna (7) – were living at 29 Paradise Street. There had been a fourth child who hadn’t survived. At that time, Arthur was a wheelwright’s painter, Hilda was an apprentice dressmaker and Percy was still at school.

Note: in the 1901 census the family name is recorded as Jerry and in the 1911 census it is recorded as Jarry.
