Samuel was born in Warwick in 1896.

In 1911 Samuel, aged 14, was living at 28 Market Place and assisting his father, also Samuel, in his business as a coal merchant. Samuel had one older brother George Alwyn born in 1893 and two younger sisters Ann born in 1901 and Edna born in 1903.

Alwyn was serving in Palestine towards the end of the war
