Alfred was born in Warwick in July 1890 in and was baptised at All Saints Church on 31st July 1890. He had three sisters Lizzie, Beatrice, and Merrill.

In 1899 his father Charles died at the age of 40. His mother Merrill married John Henry Jackson in 1903 and Alfred’s half sister Marie was born in 1906. Merrill died in 1939 aged 78.

Alfred joined the Cheshire Regiment in 1907 aged 18. According to the 1911 census he was stationed in India and was a Corporal. In 1915 Alfred had been wounded and was entitled to wear a wound stripe.

This letter from Alfred Hayward was published in the Warwick Advertiser on 8th May 1915, just over 2 weeks before his death.
