Irvine was born in Fulham, Middlesex on 7th January 1884. He was christened at St Andrews, Fulham on 22nd February.  His parents were William and Mary Anne Edith Harte.

In 1891, he was living with his parents and his sister Edith (8) at ‘Newstead’, Godstone Road, Caterham, Surrey. His father was a solicitor and they had two servants.

Irvine received his first commission in the Indian Army on 28th January 1903.  His sister Edith died in Singapore in July 1904.

Irvine married Dorothy Walker on 17th December 1910 at St Nicholas Church in Warwick. At the time he was living at 48 Clarendon Avenue, Leamington Spa and she was living at Myton. Dorothy was 6 years Irvine’s senior.

Irvine was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on the 28th January 1903 and he was then promoted to Lieutenant in late 1904.

The London Gazette 24th February 1905

The London Gazette of 22nd May 1917 noted that Irvine’s promotion from Captain to Major was made with effect from February 1st 1917

On the day he was killed Maj Harte was the supervising officer of the Mahindradal Regiment at Nanu Pass, Waziristan when Indian and British forces were fighting the Mahsud, a Pashtun tribe, on the North-West Frontier Province and attacked, and captured, the Nanu Pass. During the fighting on the left flank Maj Harte was killed and 45 other ranks killed or wounded.
