Ernest Alfred Gardner was one of the ten children of William and Lucy Gardner.

Born in 1893 Ernest was baptised at St Paul’s in Warwick on 30th August 1893, along with his older sister Edith Mary.  The family were living at 58 West Street at the time and Ernest’s father, William, was a Mail Driver.  They moved to 12 Joyce Pool and lived there for a number of years, when William was a Groom and Coachman.

In 1911 Ernest was 18 and working as a domestic Gardener.

Ernest is commemorated on his parents’ grave in Warwick Cemetery where the inscription reads:

In Affectionate Remembrance of
My dear husband WILLIAM GARDNER died September 4th 1933 aged 72 years.
Also of LUCY JANE GARDNER died September 17th 1948 aged 84 years.
And Rifleman ERNEST ALFRED GARDNER died in France May 23rd 1918 aged 25 years.
