Patrick was born in Settle, Yorkshire in 1896. Both of his parents, James and Mary, were born in Ireland. James was a career soldier and had served in India. By 1901 he had retired and the family were living in Keighley Yorkshire.

Patrick was one of eight children although three had died before 1911. He had one older sister Mary, two older brothers Edward and Thomas and a younger brother Andrew. By 1911 the family had moved to Warwick and were living at 8 Park View, The Cape. Patrick’s father was working as a warder at Warwick Prison. Patrick aged 15 and his brother Edward aged 21 were living and working at Moreton Paddox. Patrick was a groom and Edward a chauffeur.

Patrick’s sister Mary married Horace William Megeney in 1912. He was killed in action in France on 21st September 1918 and is also on the Warwick War Memorial.
